Lubbock's best horse boarding facility!

Doesn't your horse deserve green pastures?

At Lubbock's Red Roof Ranch we take great pride in having the best pastures anywhere in the Lubbock area for horses.

We have several pastures that are expertly maintained and planted in different types of grasses specifically intended for horses for year round grazing.

Our front and largest pasture is planted in a Bermuda blend that the horses just can't get enough of. It is also irrigated and fertilized on a regular schedule and we bale parts of it sometimes.

We have a small pasture planted in Alfalfa that I bale every month. It's only a couple acres but it produces a lot of top quality alfalfa hay every month. There are absolutely no weeds in it and it's fertilized and irrigated according to plant and soil samples.

Our other big pasture is planted in a summertime grass that is new to this country called tiffany. It is being marketed as an excellent horse hay very similar to timothy but higher in protein and much more draught tolerant.

Our barn area is connected to all of the pastures by gates and they always have access to shelter and good clean water. In fact our big water tank for the horses has a large bio filter that is always on and keeps it clean of dirt and parasites.  In the back of our house we have a small pecan orchard that is planted with endophyte free fescue, rye, Bermuda and clover that we occasionally graze the horses on too. That is their favorite place on the whole farm.

Our ranch is located just 5 minutes from Ransom canyon and is surrounded by CRP fields. You can ride for miles without setting foot on pavement and there is a lot to do with your horse here. It's much better than most other boarding places where all you can do is ride in an arena. Come on out for a visit and ask us about moving your horse in. We often have a waiting list to get in because of the quiet country atmosphere and because people know their horses receive the best care available here so don't wait too long before asking. We have 5 horses of our own and in order to give the best care possible to all of them I never have more than 10 horses at any one time. I am self employed and am always home to care for the horses so you won't have to worry about them.

Reminder:

We cut our Bermuda and Alfalfa hay fields usually the first week of the month. The next cutting scheduled for the beginning of August will be the last one we sell for a while as we have to put up hay for our own use during the winter. First come first serve on it so if you need hay please be here with a trailer when I am ready to bale.   You are also welcome to drop off a trailer for us to load at the $7.50 per bale price if you wish.

We have several openings for boarding horses now too. If you are a TTU student or US military please ask about our discounts for moving your horse in.

Take a look at my INFO page below for hay prices, boarding rates and other important info on services we provide.

Best of all we are just minutes from anywhere in Lubbock. We strive to offer the best year round pastures of all the boarding places in the Lubbock area.

This is where our horses come in to be fed in the afternoon. We usually let them graze around the trees for a couple hours on what is probably the best grass to be found in West Texas. It's a mix of Rye, Endophyte free tall Fescue, Bermuda and clover. It's more like something you'd find in Tennessee, where I am from, than anything around here. The chickens follow the horses nearly everywhere during the day while keeping the flies and ticks to a minimum.

This is what it looks like in the peak of it's growing season. There's nothing better around here for horses to graze on. Or for hay.

We have an Alfalfa field also. It's mostly reserved just for baling so you can be assured of the highest quality hay there is for your horses.

Horse quality Hay for sale

This is the best horse hay you will find in the Lubbock area!

We grow all of our own hay right here on the farm for the horses we own and board. Usually we have more than enough for our own use and sell the surplus to the public at great prices. Compare to feed store quality and prices and consider the fact that you can see where it is grown and know exactly what your horse will be eating and I'm sure you will be impressed.

About our hay:

Giant Bermuda

Our biggest crop is Giant Bermuda. Giant Bermuda is a seeded variety of Bermuda grass that grows to approximately 30 inches tall and is cut and baled on a 28 day cycle. It is one of the best varieties of Bermuda for horses and according to many studies done recently it does not have the impaction related colic problems that have been associated with Coastal Bermuda hay. Our Bermuda is irrigated and properly fertilized according to soil samples taken at each cutting to assure safety and optimum growing conditions. Many places growing Coastal for hay are either not fertilizing nearly enough or over fertilizing which can cause nitrate poisoning in ruminants and possibly even in horses. We only follow the advice of the lab analysis on our soil for fertilizer. We also test our hay for its nutritional value several times a year. In the 2007 growing season we averaged about 19 % crude protein with a 14 % digestible protein level. Total digestible nutrients averaged slightly over 80%.  This is better than most store bought feeds and much better than the hay most of the feed stores carry.  Especially during late winter and early spring when supply has dried up and they are selling stuff that is barely fit for a goat to eat! Our hay truly is the best you will find for your horses in the Lubbock area.

Alfalfa

Our alfalfa is grown on a 28 to 30 day cycle also to assure optimum feed values and digestibility. This is high quality horse hay also and is considered to be one of the top forages for horses and cattle there is. Our Alfalfa field is irrigated and fertilized according to soil sampling just like the Bermuda grass for safety and the highest possible yields. If you are raising performance horses or showing cattle for FFA, then any of our hay would be a great choice for you but our high quality alfalfa is probably best if you are after peak performance.  These days with fuel over 5 dollars a gallon and fertilizer just as bad it is impossible to grow the highest quality hay and sell it cheap. Here you will get what you are paying for though. We hand pick weeds to eliminate the herbicide usage, high nutritional values and good leafy alfalfa that's not all stem and dirt in the bale. Our bales are done with a new machine that produces about 60 pound string wrapped bales that are perfectly consistent in size  and weight for easy stacking at your barn.

Our nearest feed stores are selling alfalfa and grass hay for much higher prices right now.  The only reason we are a couple dollars cheaper is because there are no transportation charges buying it direct from the farm unless we have to deliver it to you. Fuel and fertilizer this year is just outrageous and it costs a lot to grow the top quality hay we have.  Hopefully things in the oil market will calm down and hay prices will be able to come down too but I don't see it happening any time soon. The prices below are the absolute best I can do though and still maintain the high quality my customers demand. My highest priority is quality here. Come out for a visit and see our fields and you will be impressed I'm sure. I will never try to pass off goat quality hay to a horse owner just to make a buck.

Tiffany grass (Teff hay)

Tiffany,Teff, Grass is a fine-stemmed, vigorous, warm season annual grass that originated in Africa.  It can produce high quality hay in a relatively short growing season.  Nutritive value of Tiffany, Teff, is comparable to Timothy, making it an excellent forage for horses and other livestock.  Palatability and animal acceptance has been reported to be very good by horse owners. This is our first year planting this grass but I've researched it a lot and I'm sure the horses will love it.

Here is a list of what we currently grow and have for sale:

Giant Bermuda:

Alfalfa:

Tiffany grass:

All hay is $6.50 a bale if you can pick it up from the field. $7.50 out of the barn.
